WHAT ARE TRAILS OF DISCOVERY?

Trails for Children

The Arts Society Trails of Discovery are for children age 8 - 12 years old and guides them around a place of worship or historic building looking at art, artefacts, architecture, and history. A corresponding answer sheet is provided for accompanying adults. Town Trails aim to encourage children to explore an area looking at art, architecture, and local history, broadening their knowledge and providing an enjoyable experience. This type of trail does not have an answer sheet, all the answers can be found by looking at information enroute. The latest development it to make these trails available by the use of QR codes for download to a mobile device. Our Children's Trails prompt young people to enjoy the stories behind their local landmarks. It is wonderful to see children's curiosity come to light.

Neighbourhood Trails

These trails are a self-guided walk around an area looking at art, architecture, local history, and culture. There are no questions in these trails but they provide interesting information that is not always apparent. Now included in Neighbourhood Trails are Railway Branch Line Trails that point out items of cultural interest and local history that can be seen during the course of the journey. These trail are also being made available by the use of QR codes

Memory Trails

Memory Trails are for people living with dementia and have been created with the help of Psychiatric and Dementia professionals. The trail takes the person living with dementia and their family or carer around the church or building looking and touching objects, evoking memories and prompting conversation.These trails can also be accessed at the venue by the use of a QR code.

...making a trail

If you are interested in starting a trail,contact The Arts Society in your area. This can be found via the front page of The Arts Society website. If the Society is willing to make a trail, you will also need permission of the building or town. The Society has to register the trail via The Arts Society website and will then be contacted by a Trails of Discovery Area Representative.

Making a Trail of Discovery is a very rewarding experience and as you create the trail you find out things you may never have known. There is help available from the Trails of Discovery Area Representative and on a microsite with help sheets, templates and completed trails that is only available to trail makers.

We are pleased that Trails of Discovery is working with The National Churches Trust to have our Trails linked to their ExploreChurches website. This will give the opportunity for people visiting churches listed to download and enjoy our Trails. Their website may be found at www.explorechurches.org
